Satchmo was the first Berner to leave us, and he left too young . . . one week shy of his 7th birthday. He was from our fist
litter (Ella x Greyson), and was a bundle of guff and bravado, the Big Boy of the litter. He will always be remembered as
the puppy with too much confidence, who got his head stuck in the wine rack.
Satchmo blossomed from an adolscent punk (his nicknames were Satch-NO! and Mr. PIBB . . . for "Pain In the Butt Boy")
to a true ambassador for his breed. He loved everyone (especially kids and puppies) and everything, and wanted to be a part
of it all. If you left him out, he let you know - every evening he had a little "talk" with us about the scarcity
of food in his bowl, the lack of cookies in his Kong, or the fact that he was shut out of his favorite room.
Just four weeks before we lost him, Satchmo helped raise $4,265 for Malignant Histiocytosis research by participating
in the Marine Mammal Center's Run For the Seals in Sausalito. Ironically, he became a part of those very studies - his final
act of being a part of it all. But then, that's all he every really wanted.
2005 was going to be "Satchmo's year". He was ready to earn his Draft Title (entered in two tests) and his
Obedience Title. It was never the right time to focus on him before . . . there was always next year. Satchmo's lesson to
us all is that there might not be a next year. Don't put off doing all those things you want to do with your dog until the
"right time". The right time is now.
Satchmo has earned the highest title of them all now - Head Angel for the BluNote clan. We know he'll take very good
care of all who come after him. But we still miss him dearly here at home.
